What Is the Purpose of a Thread Repair Kit?

What’s a Thread Repairing Kit?

The Thread Repair Kit, or Tap Set, as most commonly called by most users, is meant for the tool kit to repair damaged internal threads on their machines, mounting plates, or any other application where the parent material is softer and the threads have either been worn out or were damaged by a rusted or broken bolt, or even broken taps.

It’s Uses

Since an internal thread is an integral part of any application to secure and tighten multiple pieces together with the help of screws and bolts. Once the internal thread gets damaged for any reason, the whole application is useless as no screw or bolt can be tightened to secure the pieces together. If the external bolt gets damaged, it can be replaced easily with another one and is not expensive either. But any damaged internal thread cannot be replaced as it means changing or replacing the whole piece, plate, or article, which can be very expensive, and also replacements of such pieces are not readily available. The whole piece has to be either ordered new or be made, which is a time-consuming and expensive procedure.

  • Therefore, maintaining an internal thread is the most important thing to keep in mind in order to keep the application running and the product useful.

  • To maintain the effective use of machinery for a long time, it’s important to keep the thread inserts in proper functioning.

How Is It Used?

To repair a damaged internal thread, the first thing that comes to the mind of any machinist is "enlarging the diameter" and "using a bigger screw with a higher OD". And what happens when this "larger" thread also gets worn out? Again, go for a higher OD screw and so on and so forth. The other disadvantage is that you have to change the complete hardware to a new size, and sometimes the production and design protocols do not allow such changes in dimensions. Then to counter this drawback, we have come up with our thread repairing kits.

In the following simple steps, you can repair your damaged inserts easily-

  1. Apply oil to the drill for lubrication and tap into the pre-drilled hole in a clockwise motion till the end.

  2. Install wire thread inserts with a thread installation tool.

  3. Break the tang with a tang break-off tool.

  4. Now you can use the new and stronger thread.

Using the Thread Repairing Kit, you do not need to use any higher OD screw or bolt, and the same diameter hardware can be used again.
